Catching up with our Customers: A.A. Pittman & Sons Concrete Company, Inc.

  • Tell us about A.A. Pittman & Sons Concrete Company, its history as a company, the main services offered and how you got into this business
    • Our company began in January of 1977 with Adlai and Irene Pittman. Adlai ran the jobs and Irene ran the books from inside their garage office. They built the company from the ground up, with only their dreams and family to push and support them. As the company began to outgrow the garage office, they built a larger location on Sunbeam Road. As time moved on and the company grew, their kids began to get into the family business.

The youngest son of Adlai and Irene, Todd Pittman, is the current President. He has worked diligently since 1983 and through his 35+ year tenure, he learned every aspect of concrete from the ground up. In 2012, he became the sole owner of A.A. Pittman & Sons Concrete Co., after Adlai and Irene Pittman retired.

In 1990, one of the most significant contributions to the company occurred. It was the acquisition of Lance Clayton’s company, Formwork Specialist. Prior to this, Pittman Concrete was missing one ingredient: Cast-in-place concrete. Afterward, Lance brought his immense knowledge of concrete formwork to Pittman and filled the gap. Lance Clayton has been with Pittman Concrete ever since.

In early 2016, A.A. Pittman & Sons Concrete Co. acquired one of its longest and largest competitors, E.C. Concrete. Through this acquisition, Pittman Concrete gained even more experience, knowledge, and manpower, which has helped with the company’s continued success. However, while our team members are grateful for the successful merging of the 2 companies, we would like to lovingly remember the late Gregory & Janice Schwartzenberger, owners of E.C. Concrete who passed away in a plane crash in 2012.

In 2022 Pittman Concrete grew yet again with the acquisition of Jim’s Concrete of Brevard. Jim’s Concrete was another large competitor in the Jacksonville area. They have added another piece of the puzzle with their wealth of knowledge in the big box tilt up world. With the relationships and people gained through the Jim’s Concrete acquisition, Pittman Concrete is the largest concrete contractor in NE Florida.

In July of 2017, the company moved from its long-time location on Sunbeam Road to its current location at 650 E. 27th Street, a 6 acre facility with over 45,000 square feet. We now operate out of a second location on the Southside of Jacksonville.

Our PittCrew Concrete Pumping division currently has 10 boom pumps and 2 trailer pumps that service all of our in-house work in addition to other contractors in the area.

It is currently a 3rd generation business with Todd’s children Chandler, Victoria, and Preston working for the family company.

  • What projects are you most excited about right now and why?
    • We are about to start multiple healthcare projects for Baptist Health, Mayo Clinic and LifePoint Rehabilitation projects which will all bring unique challenges. We are also in the process of a 4 building tilt up project for Tenant Contracting and starting on two more big boxes for ARCO. Being able to build relationships with some of the new clients is exciting to us. We firmly believe that solid relationships are the foundation to repeat business.
  • What areas does your company mainly serve?
    • South East GA, North East FL and Central Coastal FL
  • How about: How is A.A. Pittman & Sons Concrete Co. Different Than Your Competition?
    • We pride ourselves on having our employees sleep in their own beds every night. Being based here in Jacksonville gives us a needed edge against our out of town competitors. We are able to use our local relationships and resources to help a project along much quicker. With over 150 employees now, we have a vast catalogue of experience across the concrete industry.
  • Do you have any predictions for the construction industry for 2023 that you want to share?
    • We see a steady increase in the healthcare sector that we predict will continue through 2023. It looks like the big box work will be steady through the year as well. Our biggest hurdle right now is concrete pricing. Over the last year, the prices have skyrocketed due to supply chain and material issues.
  • What do you buy the most from NSCS? Any branch and NSCS associate you work with the most?
    • Our biggest orders with New South are rebar. With their recent acquisition of our long time friend Jeff Malone and Malone Steel, New South now gets the majority of our rebar fabrication. We enjoy all the New South team members we have dealt with throughout the Florida market. Abhi, Suzanne, Jeff Malone and Doug Pearl have been a great team!! (Hit a home run with the Malone Steel purchase!)
  • What should others know about NSCS that they may not know?
    • The attention to detail along with the effort put forth on all levels sets the bar high in the industry. In a world of giant material suppliers, you still get a local/hometown feel from the New South team.
